My name is Maria, I am 53 years old and the mother of 3 grown amazing adults ages 26, 22, and 20. I started CrossFit at CrossFit Rock Solid 2 years ago and my journey has been nothing but amazing.
My story actually started on my 50th birthday. At the time I weighed 213lbs and had been contemplating on the best way to lose weight. My doctor was bugging me about losing weight for some time and noted in my most recent blood work results that I was a border line Type 2 diabetic. Without some sort of physical change, I was on my way to becoming insulin dependent. My oldest daughter came to me and we agreed to start a diet and exercise regimen. I have done this in the past and was skeptical. With other diets, I would lose the weight but after a period of time, I would get bored and stop and the weight would return, adding more weight than when I started. However, this time it was different.
After 1 year, I lost about 35 lbs. I didn’t have a “goal” weight in mind but I wanted to feel better about myself and become comfortable in my own skin. I accomplished this by a change in my diet (smarter choices, etc.) and exercise. I started just walking around the block, and then expanded to walking 3 miles, and then I hit our company gym. It is a small gym with plenty of machines and I began running and doing the elliptical machine. Like most diets, I hit the plateau; the weight stopped coming off and I was getting bored with doing the same thing over and over again by myself in the gym. My younger two children then recommended trying their workouts at Crossfit Rock Solid. At first I thought no way, that is for athletes (my son is a baseball player and my daughter was a collegiate track runner at the time). I saw the way they came home exhausted and sore, but exhilarated and in great shape. I saw the impact that the workouts had on their athletic results but couldn’t reconcile this to my goals. Remember, I just wanted to lose weight (no insulin) and feel better. But what the heck, why not try it, what did I have to lose? I tapped my oldest daughter and said, “let’s at least try it once.”
We went to the first class and I was hooked, I loved it – it was different, exciting, the music was loud, it was exhilarating, I never worked so hard in all my life, and the class was an hour long. That was 2 years ago and I haven’t looked back since.
I could go on and explain all about the dead lifts, clean and jerks, front squats, back squat weights, etc., all those things I knew nothing about that have now become part of my daily regimen when outlined in the WOD. But there are other ancillary amazing things that have taken place that I never imagined or thought of when joining CrossFit Rock Solid that continue to amaze me that I never knew would happen. There is an energy, a feeling of excitement that is there every day. There is a sense of community and true camaraderie that exists, people are excited to work out together to push each other to do better, to console us when we fall short of our goals and celebrate the success with high five’s, fist pumps, and a pat on the back with words like “great job,” “nice work” and they truly mean it! These words don’t come with hitting the RX weight outlined in the workout each day; I still don’t hit those numbers. They come by not giving up, by working on your form, by hitting your own personal milestones and goals. You would think that every day you would be encouraged by people hitting phenomenal weights or times in the WOD’s, but that isn’t the case. You are encouraged by people that don’t give up, that go the distance each and every time they walk in that gym. The coaches and other athletes (yes, we are all athletes) really care, it is genuine, they believe in your goals and they want you to succeed, whatever that means for you.
Going back to measure my goals, I was introduced to the Paleo diet and started to completely change my dietary needs. I work out about 4 days a week and give my body plenty of rest. I sleep much better and the best part is I lost an additional 40 lbs and I’m at a weight that feels great! I am in the best shape of my life.
I participated for the first time in “The Open” CrossFit games and did some movements and times that I never thought I could possibly do. Most recently I participated in a local Masters Crossfit competition thanks to the encouragement of the coaches. I finished tied for first in my age group and came in 2nd in the final competition round. I never in a million years would have guessed that this would be possible.
I have met some of the nicest, most sincere people in my life at CrossFit Rock Solid, we are a family. We have people of all ages, shapes, and sizes that are in our classes and best of all we have a great time doing something we all love. The people at Crossfit Rock Solid are changing people’s lives for the best, I know that first hand because they have changed mine!
